Background of the Study
Workplace injuries remain a significant occupational health concern in industrial settings, leading to reduced productivity, increased medical costs, and, in severe cases, permanent disabilities (Adekunle & Olatunde, 2023). Industrial workers are exposed to numerous hazards, including chemical exposures, machinery accidents, and repetitive strain injuries (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024). In Nigeria, Sokoto State has a growing industrial sector, yet workplace safety measures remain inadequate, increasing the risk of injuries among workers (Olalekan & Musa, 2023).
Nurses, particularly those specializing in occupational health, play a critical role in injury prevention and workplace safety. Nurse-led interventions, such as health screenings, safety training programs, ergonomic assessments, and emergency response planning, have been shown to significantly reduce workplace injuries (Okafor & Yakubu, 2024). However, the extent to which nurses are actively involved in industrial safety programs in Sokoto State remains underexplored.
This study seeks to examine the effect of nurse-led interventions on reducing workplace injuries in industrial settings in Sokoto State. The findings will provide insights into the effectiveness of such interventions and recommend ways to enhance nurses' contributions to workplace safety.
Statement of the Problem
Industrial workplaces in Sokoto State report high rates of occupational injuries, often due to inadequate safety measures, lack of proper training, and insufficient medical support at job sites (Oluwaseun & Musa, 2023). Although nurses have the potential to play a significant role in injury prevention, their involvement in workplace health and safety programs remains limited. Many industries rely on general safety officers without integrating medical professionals into their safety initiatives (Ibrahim & Okonkwo, 2024).
Research indicates that industries with strong occupational health programs, including nurse-led interventions, experience lower injury rates and improved employee well-being (Usman & Akinwale, 2023). However, challenges such as limited institutional support, lack of awareness among employers, and insufficient training for nurses hinder the implementation of these interventions. This study will assess the impact of nurse-led interventions in reducing workplace injuries and propose strategies for enhancing their effectiveness in industrial settings.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the role of nurses in workplace injury prevention in industrial settings in Sokoto State.
To evaluate the impact of nurse-led interventions on reducing workplace injuries.
To identify challenges affecting the implementation of nurse-led safety programs in industrial settings.
Research Questions
What role do nurses play in preventing workplace injuries in Sokoto State’s industrial sector?
How effective are nurse-led interventions in reducing workplace injuries?
What are the major challenges hindering the implementation of nurse-led safety programs?
Research Hypotheses
Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce workplace injuries in industrial settings in Sokoto State.
Industries that integrate nurses into their safety programs experience fewer occupational injuries.
Institutional challenges and lack of awareness hinder the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in workplace safety.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on industries in Sokoto State where nurses are involved in occupational health programs. It will examine the effectiveness of their interventions, identify challenges, and propose strategies for improving workplace safety. Limitations may include reluctance from industries to disclose injury statistics, variations in the level of nurse involvement across different industries, and potential biases in self-reported injury data.
